House Leaders Support TikTok Ban on Government Devices

The provision set to be included in government funding bill.

A spokesperson for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated on Monday that she supports a provision to ban TikTok on all government-owned devices. The provision passed the Senate last week by voice vote, and the bipartisan support of leaders in the lower chamber makes it likely that the provision will pass the House later this week.

Legislation to ban TikTok on government devices was first introduced in 2020, then reintroduced by Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri in 2021. “TikTok is a major security risk to the United States, and it has no place on government devices,” Senator Hawley said as he introduced the provision. If the measure passes the House, it will be included in the 2023 government funding omnibus that Congress is expected to vote on this week.
